Am I a Candidate for MonaLisa Touch®?

You have a 50-50 chance of developing the discomfort and distress of genitourinary syndrome of menopause. What’s that? It’s just a long medical name for the physical changes that occur in your vagina and urinary tract in the years before, during, and after menopause.

We’re not talking about temporary changes, either. Vaginal dryness and painful intercourse persist for the rest of your life if you don’t get treatment.

Here at the Georgia Center for Women, serving patients in Atlanta, Morrow, and Emory Midtown, our team of leading womens health specialists, is not willing to let any of patient suffer from a condition that’s easy to treat without surgery or downtime. That’s why we proudly offer revolutionary laser treatment with the MonaLisa Touch®

Let’s talk about the MonaLisa Touch

The MonaLisa Touch is specially designed to treat the tissues lining the inside of your vagina. Technically, it’s a fractional CO2 laser, which means it takes a single laser beam and turns it into many tiny beams. These beams treat microscopic columns of tissue rather than one spot.

Why is that important? Because it affects enough tissue to restore vaginal health while leaving some tissue untouched in a way that promotes quick healing.

When the laser’s energy reaches deep into the vaginal lining, its gentle, painless heat stimulates cellular changes. Treatment with the MonaLisa Touch regenerates new blood vessels and boosts the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.

The increase in collagen restores strength, elastin rebuilds resilience, and hyaluronic acid boosts hydration. All these changes work together to restore the vaginal and urinary tract problems that develop when your estrogen levels drop, whether during menopause, childbirth, or surgical removal of your ovaries.

Three key signs you may be a candidate for the MonaLisa Touch

Chances are you’re a good candidate for treatment with the MonaLisa Touch if you experience any of these signs:

Uncomfortable vaginal symptoms

Estrogen is essential for keeping the tissues in your vagina healthy. When estrogen levels drop, less mucus is produced, the vaginal lining begins to thin out, and the vagina becomes less elastic. The tissues also become fragile and susceptible to tearing and infection.

These changes lead to a condition called vaginal atrophy, which is part of the genitourinary syndrome of menopause. Vaginal atrophy causes symptoms such as vaginal dryness, burning, itching, and laxity. You may also develop genital itching.

The MonaLisa Touch has a better than 90% satisfaction rate among women suffering from vaginal atrophy. And your results typically last at least a year after your initial three treatments.

Pain during sexual intercourse

Lack of lubrication during intercourse is one of the first symptoms many women notice after their estrogen levels decline. Before long, persistent vaginal dryness also develops.

Both conditions make sexual intercourse a downright painful experience, but that’s not where your problems end. The vaginal lining tends to become sore as it thins out, making sex even more uncomfortable.

Six separate studies produced results showing that treatment with a fractional CO2 laser like the MonaLisa Touch significantly decreases pain during intercourse and improves overall sexual function.

Urinary incontinence

Estrogen also maintains the tissues lining your urinary tract. That means your urinary tract suffers the same changes as those found in your vagina.

Lack of collagen, in particular, contributes to incontinence, as it causes weak muscles in your bladder and urethra (the tube that carries urine out of your body).

Poor muscle tone lets urine leak out, whether due to pressure on your abdomen when you laugh, cough or exercise, or because the muscles can’t hold in a sudden, strong urge to urinate.

A study published in the International Urogynecology Journal found that treatment with the fractional CO2 laser significantly improved incontinence, and the results lasted 36 months.

The experts conducting the study confirmed that laser treatments produced cellular changes that restored muscle strength.

Treatment is short, and results are long-lasting

Each session with the MonaLisa Touch takes only about five minutes. Although you may notice an improvement after one treatment, for most women three sessions spaced about six weeks apart offer optimal results.  After that, your results last at least one year.
